  • The small city of Abbeville is the parish seat of Vermilion Parish, in the state of Louisiana, 150 miles (241 km) southwest of New Orleans. As of 2005, the population estimates recorded by the U.S. Census Bureau was 11,664. Abbeville is in the heart of “Cajun Country,” and is home to many restaurants that specialize in the authentic tastes of the region.
  • Alexandria is a city in Louisiana and is the parish seat of Rapides Parish. It lies on the south bank of the Red River in almost the exact geographic center of the state. It is the principal city of the Alexandria, Louisiana Metropolitan Statistical Area which encompasses all of both Grant and Rapides Parishes and Alexandria. The population was 46,342 at the 2000 census. It is the largest municipality of Greater Alexandria (population 147,000) which includes all of Rapides and Grant Parishes. In addition, it is the tenth largest city in the state. Alexandria is the home of the Ninth Judicial District Court.
  • The city of Bastrop is the parish seat of Morehouse Parish, in the state of Louisiana. The population was 12,988 at the 2000 census. It is the principal city of and is included in the Bastrop, Louisiana Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is included in the Monroe-Bastrop, Louisiana Combined Statistical Area.
  • The town of Benton is the parish seat of Bossier Parish, in the state of Louisiana. The population was 2,035 at the 2000 census.
  • Bossier City is a city in Bossier Parish, Louisiana. As of the 2000 Census, the city had a total population of 56,461. Bossier City is closely tied to its larger sister city Shreveport, located on the western bank of the Red River. The Shreveport-Bossier metro area is the center to the region known as the Ark-La-Tex.
  • The town of Columbia is the parish seat of Caldwell Parish, in the state of Louisiana. The population was 477 at the 2000 census.
  • The town of Coushatta is the parish seat of rural Red River Parish, in the state of Louisiana. The population was 2,299 at the 2000 census. The community is approximately 45 miles south of Shreveport on U.S. Highway 71. James Durrwood Bogan, a Coushatta native, won the Navy Cross in World War II.
  • The village of Harrisonburg is the parish seat of Catahoula Parish, in the state of Louisiana. The population was 746 at the 2000 census.
  • The town of Homer is the parish seat of Claiborne Parish, in the state of Louisiana. The population was 3,788 at the 2000 census.
  • Lafayette is a city on the Vermilion River in Lafayette Parish, in the state of Louisiana. Lafayette is the parish seat. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 110,257; a 2004 census estimate put the metro area’s population at 246,160. It is the fourth largest city in the state. It is the principle city of the Lafayette-Acadiana LA Combined Statistical Area, which, in 2004, had a total population of 522,838. The Fifthteen Judicial District Court is located in Lafayette.
  • Lake Charles is the fifth largest city in the state of Louisiana. It is the major cultural and educational center in the southwest region of the state and one of the most important in Acadiana. As of the 2000 U.S. census, Lake Charles population was 71,757. The city serves as the parish seat of Calcasieu Parish. The city is considered a major petrochemical refining center, gaming center, and home to McNeese State University.
  • The small city of Leesville is the parish seat of Vernon Parish, in the state of Louisiana. The population was 6,753 at the 2000 census. The city is home to the Fort Polk U.S. Army installation. The populations of Fort Polk and Leesville, if combined, would result in a city with a population of over 20,000.
  • The city of Mansfield is the parish seat of De Soto Parish, in the state of Louisiana. The population was 5,582 at the 2000 census. According to the 2004 census, the city had a population of 5,496. The Battle of Mansfield, a Confederate victory under General Richard Taylor (son of Zachary Taylor), was fought here on April 8, 1864. This battle turned 42,000 Union Troops away from their conquest of the Louisiana Confederate Capital, Shreveport and sent them in retreat to New Orleans.
  • The town of Many is the parish seat of Sabine Parish, in the state of Louisiana. The population was 2,889 at the 2000 census. The town was named for John B. Many, the commander of nearby Fort Jesup.
  • The city of Marksville is the parish seat of Avoyelles Parish, in the state of Louisiana. The population was 5,537 at the 2000 census.
  • The small city of Minden is the parish seat of Webster Parish, in the state of Louisiana. It is located twenty-eight miles east of Shreveport, the seat of Caddo Parish. The population, which has been remarkably stable since 1960, was 13,027 at the 2000 census.
  • The city of Monroe is the parish seat of Ouachita Parish, in the state of Louisiana. It is the principal city of and is included in the Monroe, Louisiana Metropolitan Statistical Area (pop. 171,138), which is included in the Monroe-Bastrop, Louisiana Combined Statistical Area. Monroe’s Combined Statistical Area is 201,074. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 53,107, making it the eighth largest city in Louisiana. Monroe is the home of the University of Louisiana at Monroe. It also houses the headquarters of CenturyTel, the eighth-largest telecommunications provider in the nation. Monroe is situated on the Ouachita River and continues to serve as the population center and distribution outlet for the surrounding farming community. Monroe will soon play host to a motor speedway in the year 2008.
  • The city of Natchitoches is the parish seat of Natchitoches Parish, in the U.S. state of Louisiana. The population was 17,865 at the 2000 census. The community, named after the Natchitoches tribe, was founded in 1714 as part of French Louisiana. Several motion pictures have been filmed in Natchitoches, including Steel Magnolias, starring Julia Roberts, Sally Field, Daryl Hannah, Shirley MacLaine, Dolly Parton, and Olympia Dukakis, and The Horse Soldiers, starring William Holden and John Wayne. Natchitoches has long been known for its popular Christmas lighting festival held the first Saturday in December. The lights continue to brighten the Cane River until after New Year’s Day. In 2006, the festival will celebrate its 80th year of existence.
  • The city of Opelousas, situated at the juncture of Interstate 49 and US Highway 190, is the parish seat of St. Landry Parish, in the state of Louisiana. The population was 22,860 at the 2000 census. Opelousas is a center of Zydeco music.
  • Pineville is a city in Rapides Parish, Louisiana. It is adjacent to the city of Alexandria, Louisiana, and is part of that city’s Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 13,829 at the 2000 census.
  • Shreveport is the third largest city and the third largest metropolitan area in the state of Louisiana and in the top 100 largest cities in the United States. It is the seat of Caddo Parish. Bossier City lies across the Red River in Bossier Parish and the Shreveport-Bossier City Metropolitan Area population exceeds 375,000.
  • The town of Rayville is the parish seat and the largest community of Richland Parish, in the state of Louisiana. The population was 4,234 at the 2000 census. It is the birthplace of NBA’s 50th Anniversary All-Time Team member Elvin Hayes.
  • The city of Ruston is the parish seat of Lincoln Parish, in the state of Louisiana. As of the 2004 census, the city population was 20,665. The current mayor is Dan Hollingsworth. Ruston is home to Louisiana Tech University and rests on the eastern border of the Ark-La-Tex. Ruston’s economy is built around Louisiana Tech and caters to its college population. As of the year 2005, the official student enrollment to Louisiana Tech University was approximately 11,710. Adding several thousand personnel employed by the university, the total university population appears to rival the city itself.
  • The city of Ville Platte is the parish seat of Evangeline Parish, in the state of Louisiana. The population was 8,145 at the 2000 census.
  • The small city of Winnfield is the parish seat of Winn Parish, in the state of Louisiana. The population was 5,749 at the 2000 census. It is also the hometown of Huey P. Long, Earl Long and Oscar K. Allen; former governors of Louisiana
  • The city of Winnsboro is the parish seat of Franklin Parish, in the state of Louisiana. The population was 5,344 at the 2000 census.

  • Baton Rouge, French: is historically the second largest city in Louisiana behind New Orleans but the effects of Hurricane Katrina have, at least temporarily, reduced the population of New Orleans such that Baton Rouge Parish is currently larger than Orleans Parish. Baton Rouge is also capital of the State of Louisiana. It serves as the parish seat of East Baton Rouge Parish. In June 2005, East Baton Rouge Parish contained 412,000 residents.
  • Biloxi is a city in Harrison County, Mississippi. The 2000 census recorded the population as 50,644. Biloxi is co?county seat with the larger city Gulfport, in the Gulfport-Biloxi, Mississippi Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is included in the Gulfport-Biloxi-Pascagoula, Mississippi Combined Statistical Area.
  • Corpus Christi is the county seat of Nueces County and a coastal city located in the state of Texas. It is part of the region known as South Texas. As of the 2000 U.S. Census, the city had a population of 986,641,454 people (though a July 1, 2004 estimate placed the population at 281,196), making it the eighth-largest city in the state. The translation from Latin of the city’s name is Body of Christ, given to the settlement by the Spanish, in honor of the Blessed Sacrament (Eucharist).
  • East, Texas
  • Galveston is the county seat of Galveston County located along the Gulf Coast region in the state of Texas within the Houston, Sugar Land, Baytown metropolitan area. As of the 2005 U.S. Census estimate, the city had a total population of 57,466. Galveston is accessible by a causeway linking Galveston Island to the mainland on the north end of the city, a toll bridge on the western end of the island, and by ferry boat service on the east end of the city. Galveston is known for its historic neighborhoods and a ten-mile long seawall designed to protect the city from floods. It is also home to the infamous Balinese Room, a historic nightclub and former illegal gambling hall located on a 600-foot pier extending into the Gulf of Mexico.
  • Gulfport is the second largest city in Mississippi. It is the larger (population wise) of two principal cities of the Gulfport-Biloxi, Mississippi Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is included in the Gulfport-Biloxi-Pascagoula, Mississippi Combined Statistical Area. As of the 2000 census, the city of Gulport had a total population of 71,127. Gulfport is co-county seat with Biloxi of Harrison County, Mississippi. Gulfport is the east coast home to the US Navy Seabees.
  • Houston is the largest city in the state of Texas and fourth-largest in the United States. As of the 2005 U.S. Census estimate, Houston had a population of more than 2 million. The city covers more than 600 square miles (1,600 km²). Houston is the county seat of Harris County and part of the Houston?Sugar Land?Baytown metropolitan area, the seventh-largest metropolitan area in the U.S. with a population of more than 5.2 million.
  • Jackson is the capital and the most populous city of the State of Mississippi. As of the 2000 census, Jackson’s population was 184,256. As of July 1, 2005, the census estimates that the Jackson Metropolitan area (MSA), including its suburbs in Hinds, Rankin, Madison, Copiah, and Simpson counties, has a population of 522,580, more than one-sixth the population of the state. Jackson is one of the county seats of Hinds County; Raymond is the other county seat. Jackson is also a part of the Jackson-Yazoo City Combined Statistical Area (CSA). The current slogan for the city is “Jackson, Mississippi: City with Soul”. Frank Melton is the current mayor of Jackson. The city is home to the international headquarters of Phi Theta Kappa, an honor society for the students enrolled in two-year colleges.

  • Marshall is a major city of the northeastern region of the state of Texas. It is a major cultural and educational center in East Texas, and the multi-state Ark-La-Tex region. As of the 2000 U.S. Census, Marshall population was 23,935. It is the county seat of Harrison County
  • Mobile is a city located in Mobile County, Alabama, US, along the northwest shores of Mobile Bay. As of the 2005 US Census estimate, the city had a population of 191,544. It is the principal city of the Mobile metropolitan statistical area (MSA), which had a population of approximately 401,427 and a population of 564,013 in the combined statistical area in 2005. Mobile is the third most populous city in the State of Alabama and the principal city of the second most populous metropolitan area of the state.

The Port of New Orleans ranks as one of the busiest sea ports in the world.
  • San Antonio is the second-most populous city in the state of Texas after Houston and seventh-most populated in the United States. As of the 2005 U.S. Census estimate, the city had a population of over 1.2 million. Its eight-county metropolitan area has a population of over 1.8 million, the twenty-ninth most-populated metro area in the United States. San Antonio, which is the county seat of Bexar County, covers over 400 square miles on the northern edge of the South Texas region and southeast of the Texas Hill Country.

  • Tyler is the county seat of Smith County in East Texas. The city is named for President John Tyler in recognition of his support for Texas’ admission to the United States. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 83,650, though a 2005 demographics study commissioned by the city pegged the population at 101,106.
